General Earth (works) to Tapeworks! 27/03/2008 @ 07:36 (GMT -4)

After 30 years in the recording business, Tapeworks President Doug Kupper knows how to mic a piano. Tapeworks has several expensive, large diaphragm microphones that can capture the sparkle of the Yamaha C6 concert grand piano that his clients have grown to love. But, when recording jazz ensembles and piano accompaniment where separation is important, the options using traditional approaches are few. The Earthworks Piano Mic (PM40) unique design offers the added option of closing the piano lid without losing image or fidelity.

Tapeworks is the first studio in the nation to utilize this innovative microphone system and is already receiving rave reviews on its performance.

The new system addes flexibility to the setup and tracking approach. When recording jazz groups and piano accompaniment, leakage is a huge concern. After extensive testing of other systems, the PM-40 was the only one that allowed lid closure to reduced leakage while recording.

What's more, the dedicated nature of this system leaves other mics open for other purposes. Tapeworks has found, though they needed the system for ensemble tracking, they now prefer it for solo piano recording as well. Kupper notes, "with the lid open we can change the position and orientation of the capsules to vary the tonal picture.." The adjustable system is installed right into the piano, so there's no time wasted mounting mics.

Earthworks’ innovative new product is a great addition to our microphone lineup, and has certainly enhanced our already outstanding piano!

General It's about time to go skiing! 27/03/2008 @ 07:36 (GMT -4)

Tapeworks has been humming with ski-season activity. Two of the area’s biggest ski resorts, Okemo and Jiminy Peak, have both recorded their radio campaigns here. Ironically, the voices used were via ISDN from in sunny San Antonio. TX and Raleigh, NC… While they were looking out the studio window at the sunny, balmy weather in their shorts and T-shirts, they were animatedly describing the winter fun to be had skiing! Between modern snow machines and Mother Nature’s wrath these last few weeks, it’s prime time to get up on the mountain!

The audio tracks were produced, recorded and mixed here at Tapeworks, using an original score by Doug Berman. Congratulations, all!

General On the road again... 27/03/2008 @ 07:36 (GMT -4)

Yesterday, Tapeworks’ President Doug Kupper took to the road once again! Using our high-quality all-digital system, which includes the Apogee Mini-Me, he recorded a PSA with Attorney-General Richard Blumenthal for the Humane Society. Blumenthal was holding a press conference to promote the end of dog-fighting in CT, and spent a great deal of time on it… The conference was about an hour!

The PSA was in response to the Michael Vick dog-fighting scandal, in an effort to raise awareness about animal cruelty and advertise a new reward program sponsored by the HS. Anyone offering information that leads to the arrest and prosecution of someone involved in animal fighting will receive a $5000 reward.

General Booming Down the Green 27/03/2008 @ 07:36 (GMT -4)

Yesterday, ESPN ace Broadcaster and Brown alumnus Chris “Boomer” Berman was at Tapeworks recording radio spots for the Brown University Athletic Association. Both Berman’s kids (Doug and Meredith) currently attend the school, continuing an impressive family legacy. A former Brown hockey player, Chris’ booming voice proved a perfect compliment to promoting the dynamic sports program!

After the session, Boomer and son Doug unwound at the TPC golf course in Cromwell, along with our own Doug Kupper! Kupper and the elder Berman enjoyed watching the younger Berman slam huge shots including driving the 16th green like a pro.

General Are You Ready For Some... Mixing? 27/03/2008 @ 07:36 (GMT -4)

Here’s a trivia question: what do the following people have in common?

• John Colby (producer)
• Hank Williams Jr. (famed country singer/guitarist)
• John Holbrook (engineer for the Brian Setzer Orchestra)
• Drake Bell (Nickelodeon’s Drake and Josh, guitar/vocals)
• Bootsy Collins (bass)
• Richie Sambora (Bon Jovi guitar/vocals)
• Gretchen Wilson (vocals)
• Cindy Blackman (drummer, of Lenny Kravitz fame)

Oh right, they were all part of a track mixed and mastered here!

Each of the talented artists listed above recorded their track in different studios, and all those tracks were brought together to be mixed and mastered here at Tapeworks Recording Studio.

Producer John Colby worked with our Bill Ahearn and engineer John Holbrook to create an awesome version of Hank Williams Jr.’s “Rowdy Frynds” for ESPN. Keep your eyes and ears open on Monday nights for another great track mixed by Tapeworks!
